From The Mayor's Desk:
The residents of the City of Eureka authorized the Board to sell the City’s water and sewer systems to Missouri American Water by vote in August of 2020. The City entered into the contract to sell in the fall of 2020. We then submitted our sale for approval to the Missouri Public Service Commission (“PSC”) in April of 2021.
While the sale has been pending approval, the City has continued to operate the water and sewer system.
On June 9th the PSC approved the sale of the Eureka Water and Sewer System to Missouri American Water. This PSC approval is the final requirement in order for the sale to move forward.
The approval process took longer than we had anticipated, both due to COVID delays and due to our sale being one of the first completed under the current state statue governing this process. After an extensive review and full administrative hearing, the Commission approved our sale by a 4-1 vote. While the process was long, the City understands the complexity of the matter, and appreciates the professionalism of the PSC and it’s process.
The City is now moving forward with Missouri American Water to complete the sale of our system and hope to close within the next 60-90 days.
Because of the significant delays in the process from our original projections, I will be working to provide a current time line update on our system (and most importantly the improved water) over the next several weeks.
One good piece of news is that Missouri American Water kept working during this process and has completed the engineering on the first phase of the project. They will begin construction for it shortly. The second phase engineering is nearly complete, and we anticipate that it should be ready to construct as the first phase is completed.
In summary, the sale has cleared all hurdles, we are moving to close, and construction will start soon on bringing our new water source to Eureka.
I will continue to update you on all the details, but wanted to share this good news tonight. Its been a long process, but Eureka's water issue is finally resolved.
